Stop Re-Using Plastic Containers as it Affects Health
Universiti Malaya toxicologist Prof Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd said that the people should not be re using their disposable containers as there were health hazards.
Disposable items like plastic food containers and water bottles should be disposed after single us.
Prof Dr Mustafa said that if the plastic containers are re-used many times, the harmful chemicals in that disposable containers (plastic containers and plastic bottles) can leach into the food or water that we are drinking.
Plastic bags should not also be used to pack hot soups or drinks as it contains harmful chemicals.
He added saying that this harder plastic containers usually contained bisphenol A (BPA) while the softer plastic containers contains phthalates.
This both chemicals can disrupt the endocrine system (hormones).
This chemicals can cause obesity and also delay in puberty development.
Phthalates causes obesity and BPA causes delay in puberty development.
The Study:
Studies has shown that the people who consume food using their re used plastic containers, researches have found that their subject’s urinary concentration of BPA is very high. It shows higher level of chemicals in their body.
Even in the United States (US), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups last year July due to this chemicals that can cause problem in child’s development.
Dr Mustafa said plastic feeding bottles should be changed once every three months and earlier if they become scratched or cloudy in colour.
There was a studied carried out on 200 babies in Klang Valley, Dr Mustafa said that 88% of them are carrying BPA in their blood as it has been transferred from their mothers who are exposed to it.
People should start using stainless steel tiffin carriers for food and also stainless steel bottles to store water for drinking. Stop using plastic containers. It is no only harmful to human health but also to the environment. – The Star
