Number of people thinking of committing suicide is increasing

PETALING JAYA: The number of people around Klang Valley thinking of committing suicide are increasing and has doubled last year. 

BeFrienders KL Chairman L. Mary Raj, said that the number of people expressing suicidal thoughts has increased in numbers since 2008

Statistics has shown that in 2008 there are about 1,393 people expressed suicidal thoughts and the number last year was double by 2,668.

Usually the suicidal thoughts are usually problems in relationship which then followed by psychiatric and financial problem, L. Mary Raj said. 

The people that usually call BeFrienders with the intention of committing suicide are people below 30 years old. 

Other than phone calls, these expression are also made through e-mails and face-to-face meetings. 

Chinese callers are about 60% followed by Indians and then lastly Malays.

L. Mary Raj said that the reason why there are more people having suicidal thoughts is because of the living conditions that we are all facing now. Too many stressful conditions.

According to the National Suicide Registry, 117 suicide cases were recorded in 2007, while 425 cases were seen in 2010. Indians recorded the highest suicide rate at 3.67 for every 100,000 Indians, followed by the Chinese at 2.44 per 100,000.
